Demon the dolphin
While I was writing Hope Bay I wanted to know what it felt like to touch a dolphin and to feel one surge up beneath you in the water. At Seaworld on the Gold Coast, Australia I was able to get into a special pool with a dolphin. I had mixed feelings doing this – ambilivant is the word. I was so excited to be in the water with the dolphin but I doubt he was so excited to be with me.
There were six people or so in my group and we were told to swim out into the centre of the pool and bob (we had life jackets on). I was surprised that I felt scared to swim out into the pool. Demon swam so quickly and rushed past with such power. He was instructed to swim slowly past us so we could pat him or to surface and dive around us. Do you know what I did? Every time he came near me I’d speak to him. I’d say, “Hello Demon!” or “Aren’t you beautiful.” No one else spoke to him at all and to my surprise he kept coming back to me. He’d surface from below right in front of me and just float there. In the end the trainer had to order him off to the other people as well. So, there’s a hint for you if you ever find yourself swimming with a dolphin – chat.
